Abstract
Gastrointestinal (GI) tract diseases of the liver, biliary organs, stomach, pancreas, and intestine certainly can cause right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain. Disorders of other organ system such as the heart, lung, kidney, adrenal, spine, lymphatic system, skin, and endometrium may also produce RUQ pain. The clinical history and symptoms of each disease process often have characteristics that can help physician formulate a working differential diagnosis. In order to offer appropriate, cost-effective, and timely care to patients with right upper quadrant pain, physicians should take a stepwise approach in diagnosis and treatment.
