Abstract

The Side Effects of Drugs Annuals form a series of volumes in which the adverse effects of drugs and adverse reactions to them are surveyed. The series supplements the contents of Meyler's Side Effects of Drugs: the International Encyclopedia of Adverse Drug Reactions and Interactions. This review of the 2011 publications on drugs that affect blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, and hemostasis covers coumarin anticoagulants, heparins, direct thrombin inhibitors (bivalirudin and dabigatran), direct factor Xa inhibitors (apixaban, edoxaban, and rivaroxaban), the indirect factor Xa inhibitor fondaparinux, thrombolytic drugs (alteplase and streptokinase), drugs that alter platelet function (dipyridamole, the glycoprotein IIb-IIIa inhibitors abciximab and eptifibatide, and the thienopyridines clopidogrel, prasugrel, ticagrelor, and ticlopidine), and the hemostatic agents aminocaproic acid, aprotinin, protamine, and tranexamic acid.
