Abstract

Studies show that many ED patients who are current smokers are interested in receiving an intervention to help them quit smoking. Ask patients if they are current smokers and, if so, ask them if they are interested in quitting. Tell patients whose chief complaint is asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, or pneumonia that their ED visit is probably related to their smoking. Give patients a card with a toll-free smoking quitline.
