Abstract

A description is presented of 1) methods for displaying the entire 3-D ultrasonic B-scan with each cross-sectional image in its correct spatial position relative to the other images, and 2) image enhancement methods which successfully overcome the obscuring effects of superposition to visualize selected 3-D anatomy. The display method, accomplished utilizing a digital computer, requires the analog-to-digital conversion (digitization) of the multiple parallel B-scans which make up the 3-D image. The magnitude of each picture element (pixel) in the digital array represents the ″intensity″ of the B-scan at that position.
