More and more information is emerging about the various checkpoints through which stem cells pass to give rise to committed precursors and their differentiated progeny. Here, Paul Kincade and colleagues discuss their recent findings on groups of B-cell precursors, their heterogeneity, and the signals that may be required for their further development.
