Abstract
Complications of atherosclerotic plaque rupture such as myocardial infarction and stroke are the leading cause of death and disability in the developed world. Despite our familiarity with the clinical aspects of this disease, and the considerable insights into the microanatomic and histologic substrates underlying vulnerable and ruptured atherosclerotic plaques, precise molecular mechanisms are just beginning to be unraveled.
