Abstract

Located between two ecologically and physiologically distinct segments of gut, the ileocolonic junction possesses specific motor functions that determine how contents move between the small bowel and colon. This article describes these functions and proposes that their perturbation may contribute to the symptoms experienced by patients with the irritable bowel syndrome.
