N2 - To the Editor: In the otherwise enjoyable paper by Stone and De Leo on “Psychotherapeutic Control of Hypertension” (N Engl J Med 294:80–84, 1976) the authors' interpretation of the changes in furosemide-stimulated plasma-renin activity (PRA) must be questioned. The activity decreased in both treated and control groups, and the mean decrease was actually greater in the controls than in the treated patients. Nevertheless, because the fall reached statistical significance only in the treated and not in the control group, the authors hypothesize that in the treatment group, “a decrement of sympathetic tone was responsible for the changes of PRA.
