Abstract
Conscious sedation in gastrointestinal endoscopy is useful for both the patient and the endoscopist since it helps acceptance of the procedure and renders it easier. Intravenous sedation is nowadays the accepted standard in GI endoscopy, however a number of guidelines and recommendations have to be followed to avoid risks and drawbacks. In particular, careful monitoring by the endoscopic staff and the knowledge of appropriate resuscitation techniques are of the utmost importance. This review analyzes in detail types of sedative agents, methods of administration, possible interaction with other drugs and monitoring techniques used in GI endoscopy.
