Abstract

This self-directed learning module highlights new advances in this topic area. It is a section of the chapter on rehabilitation in nerve and muscle diseases for the Self-Directed Medical Knowledge Program Study Guide for practitioners and trainees in physical medicine and rehabilitation. It contains suggested treatment considerations for diseases of nerve and muscle. This includes the management of cardiac and pulmonary sequelae, malnutrition and obesity, and pain. Medications for specific symptoms are outlined, and surgical management is considered. Appropriate exercises for nerve and muscle disorders are also discussed. Autonomic neuropathy, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and the desensitized limb are specific topics covered in some detail.
