Abstract

This article summarizes the histological forms of benign and atypical pathology that are encountered in breast biopsy material, including open surgical excisions and needle cores. It is focused particularly on lesions that are difficult to distinguish from maLignancy, owing to histological mimicry caused by high levels of cellularity and/or architectural complexity. These topics include papilloma, sclerosing lesions, secretory lesions, and columnar alteration in addition to atypical ductal hyperplasia and atypical lobular hyperplasia. The text is heavily focused on providing key definitional characteristics and providing specific microscopic criteria that are useful in distinguishing between problematic examples. The level of future breast cancer risk attributable to various entities is described. Finally, current practice regarding cLinical management of various lesions is reviewed.
