Processing and evaluation of lung biopsy specimens

Abstract

A limited number of sampling techniques are available for the purpose of examining lung tissue. A multidisciplinary approach to this assessment is advisable, cost effective, and increases the possibility of accurate results. Specific biopsy and cell sampling techniques are discussed with recommendations for most effective and appropriate handling and processing. The benefits and limitations of each technique from the pathologists's view-point are also discussed.
