Effective pain management improves patient satisfaction, decreases hospital stays, and facilitates discharges to home instead of to assisted care facilities after total hip arthroplasty. There have been substantial recent gains in our knowledge on how to deal more effectively with pain after surgery. Emerging multimodal pain management protocols have been successful in diminishing pain and improving early outcomes, particularly when coupled with the use of peripheral nerve blocks. We outline the basic principles of contemporary multimodal anesthesia and particularly emphasize the added value of peripheral nerve blocks.
