Abstract
While picture archiving and communication system (PACS) projects are underway in western countries, China is making a revolutionary advancement in digital medical record. A PACS image archive system is developed for China with rather low cost. To build this reliable and flexible system, a number of factors such as system capacity requirement, storage and retrieval performance and cost savings, should be met. The hierarchy image storage mechanism is used to meet these requirements.
