Abstract

A number of factors affect the heart's response to electrical stimulation, including the strength and duration of the stimulus, the type of waveform used, and the types of leads. The same holds true for the ability of a device to properly sense cardiac electrical activity. This chapter reviews the basics of pacing, sensing, and defibrillation to provide the foundation needed for clinical use of pacemakers, defibrillators, and resynchronization devices. The type of testing performed at implant, and basics regarding measuring shock dose and use of antitachycardia pacing are discussed. The effect of drugs on cardiac stimulation is also discussed.
