Abstract

This study presents results of in vitro cardiac imaging, preliminary to application to in vivo human hearts. A motor-driven mounted transducer was incrementally rotated over 180 degree to obtain 50 angles of view. Two excised normal dog hearts and two pig hearts with anatomical defects were scanned with a conventional echo sector scanner. After data collection and reconstruction, three-dimensional surface displays were generated for both the endocardial and epicardial surfaces. From oblique section displays, the structural defects in the abnormal in vitro hearts were clearly visible. With further development, these techniques promise greater facility in analysis and display of three-dimensional echo images and are adaptable for in vivo cardiac imaging as well.
