Abstract

Migraine is a common neurological disorder that manifests with disabling attacks of headache, hypersensitivities to environmental stimuli, nausea, and vomiting. Although most people with migraine have episodic migraine, 2% of the general population suffers from chronic migraine. Chronic migraineurs have headaches on at least 15 days per month, with full-blown migraines on at least 8 days per month. Frequent use of migraine abortive medications is an important risk factor for transformation from episodic to chronic migraine, and overuse can result in 'medication-overuse headache.' This article reviews the clinical aspects of chronic migraine and medication-overuse headaches.
