Abstract

Microscopic colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon characterized by chronic watery diarrhea. While the colonic mucosa appears grossly normal in microscopic colitis, the diagnosis is based on abnormal histologic features. There are two main subtypes, collagenous colitis and lymphocytic colitis, which have similar clinical features and therefore are differentiated histologically. In this article, we review the disease epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and treatment options.
