Abstract

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are cells that have the ability to maintain, self-renew, and give rise to different stromal cell types. These cells can be obtained from a variety of sources that includes bone marrow and adipose tissue. MSCs have an intrinsic tropism towards inflammation and tumor tissues, which makes them an attractive candidate for cellularbased therapies. This chapter summarizes the properties of different sources of MSCs, their potential therapeutic use for brain tumor and other brain disorders, and their interaction with immune system cells. Ultimately, MSCs represent a promising new cellular therapy paradigm where these cells can be used as delivery vehicles for therapeutic molecules or serve as a source of replacement cells in degenerative diseases.
