Abstract

The concept of using two energy beams in CT imaging dates to Hounsfield’s early paper, where he explained that by using two distinct tube potentials, one could enhance the contrast of an image and differentiate materials. Several important papers published in the 1970s and the 1980s established the theoretical foundation of dual-energy CT imaging. Due to the limitations of CT technology at that time, dual-energy CT could not be used routinely in clinical practice. This all changed in 2006 when dual-source CT became commercially available, enabling dual-energy CT for routine patient exams.
