Abstract

Whether amenorrhea is primary or secondary, identification of the 'lesion' by anatomic site permits a practical approach to etiologic diagnosis and to appropriate management. Three structural entities must be considered - the hypothalamopituitary axis, the ovaries, and the uterovaginal outflow tract. Deficits in hormone synthesis or action constitute a fourth category.
