Abstract

Thirty soil samples were screened for the isolation of α-amylase producing fungi. Two hundred fungi were isolated, and 100 of them were found to possess amylolytic activity by streak plate method. Of these, 75 isolates were studied by submerged fermentation (SmF). No correlation was observed between amylase production on plate and SmF. Three promising isolates (20A3, 18A2 and 24A1) based on SmF were identified to the genus level and were found to be Aspergillus, Cephalosporium and Penicillium respectively. Among these, Aspergillus sp. was found to possess the highest amylase activity (73 UmL -1).
