Abstract
The gynecologic surgeon must be aware of the potential for and be skilled in the management of operative injuries to the intestine. Although such injury is rare, unrecognized or improperly repaired intestinal injuries can be fatal. Adherence to specific principles of prevention and management will improve the care of patients who are at risk for operative bowel injury. This manuscript outlines basic concepts related to the management of bowel injury incurred during surgery. Operative technique and postoperative care guidelines employed by the senior author are summarized.
