Transplantation is the standard of care for selected patients with end-stage organ failure and provides the opportunity for excellent long-term survival. It does require extraordinary coordination of care before, during, and after transplantation to maximize the likelihood of success. Transplantation depends on the availability of suitable donor organs and is possible only through the profound generosity and altruism of those who are willing to donate or those who consent to donation on behalf of their loved ones. Thorough oversight of transplantation is performed at the national level, which is intended to ensure the best use of this precious resource.
