Hypokinetic (Non-Parkinsonian) Movement Disorders

Abstract

This chapter highlights neurologic disorders characterized by a poverty of movements that are unexplained by any impairment in classic motor brain circuitry and lack the characteristic features of parkinsonian disorders, namely rigidity and bradykinesia. This chapter reviews several common neurologic causes of non-parkinsonian hypokinesia, it is not intend to represent an exhaustive list of entities rarely reported to present as hypokinesia. Important disorders discussed in this brief review include stiff-person syndrome and its variants, primary lateral sclerosis, catatonia, neuromuscular causes, and psychogenic slowness. The approach is to highlight their clinical features and management strategies wherever applicable.
