Abstract
The Dutch Journal of Medicine (NTvG) invited a group of clinicians and academics to its office to debate the role of shared decisionmaking in contemporary medical practice. Through a series of brief presentations and extensive discussion and debate, participants sought to understand the nature of the differences between those who advocate for and against this practice. This paper summarises our position, solidly in the first camp, and reflects our appreciation for the nature of the controversy.
