Abstract

There are currently several studies being conducted around the world to determine the feasibility of using underground pipelines (tubes, conduits, and tunnels) for transporting various types of freight that are normally transported by truck. A key issue in the design of these systems is how to dispatch and control the freight capsules according to f freight shipment requirements. First, this paper presents an optimization model that captures the dispatching / control problem, second, a problem specific heuristic is developed in order generate solutions to realistic sized problems and results are compared to several well-know heuristics in order to explore solution quality.
