Abstract

A polymerase chain reaction based assay was used to evaluate expression of thyroid hormone receptor β2 mRNA in rat hypothalamus. Expression was detected in the arcuate, ventromedial and paraventricular nuclei, as well as the median eminence. Trace expression was found in the dorsomedial nucleus, but no expression of thyroid hormone receptor β2 was detected in the lateral hypothalamus or the preopric region. The results indicate that, contrary to previous belief, expression of thyroid hormone receptor β2 is not confined to the anterior pituitary.
