Abstract

Purpose: To provide the promoting effect of extract of Ginkgo Biloba leaves (EGb50) on nerve regeneration. Methods: Forty-eight male Sprague-Dawely rats were randomly divided into control group and EGb 50 group. Sciatic nerve injury model was set up. Then 1 mL of normal saline in the control group, 1 mL of EGb50 were administered every day after nerve injury. Electrophysiological, histological examinations and functional evaluation were used to assess nerve regeneration and the functional recovery in 2,4,6,8 weeks of operative intervals respectively. Results: The recovery rate of sciatic functional index (SFI), twitch tension and tetanic tension, motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV), wet weight of triceps surae and the passing rate of myelinated nerve were significantly higher in EGb 50 group in all the time point than that of control(P<0.01). Conclusions: EGb50 has the effect of promoting regeneration of injuried peripheral nerve.
