Abstract

A mathematical model based on the plane-strain finite-element method has been developed for simulating the cross-sectional shape changes of the heart's left ventricle during cardiac cycles. The left ventricle is analyzed as a pressure vessel with contractile capability and its cross-sectional shape changes are determined by an incremental-loading iterative technique. Data of cross-sectional shapes reconstructed from isolated beating canine left ventricle experiments using an x-ray scanner have been adopted for calculating the passive stiffness and the contraction of the heart muscle during the diastole and systole phases, respectively. Sample simulated cross-sectional shape changes are presented and suggestions for further improvement of the proposed model are given.
