Abstract
This article reviews the methods to measure colonic transit in humans and their application in health and disorders of bowel function. Colonic transit is an established clinical and research tool for evaluating colonic function, and it can be evaluated using different methods. The oldest and most widely used technique is radiopaque markers. During the past 2–3 decades, scintigraphy has become the preferred standard in research studies and tertiary referral centers. The newest method is the wireless motility capsule, which is validated as an accurate measurement of colonic transit. Colonic transit measurements are gaining considerable support for their use as actionable biomarkers for individuals with functional lower gastrointestinal disorders.
