Chromatin Dynamics and Epigenetics of Stem Cells and Stem-Like Cancer Cells

Abstract

Embryonic stem cells must be transformed into fate-restricted derivatives before being used for cell therapy. Discerning the intrinsic plasticity and regenerative potential of stem cell populations requires studying chromatin dynamic modifications that shape their respective epigenomes. Here, we review the epigenetic changes during stem cell commitment and highlight the processes deregulated in stem-like cancer cells. Detailed understanding of these molecular regulations will significantly contribute to our understanding of developmental process with utility for regenerative therapeutics.
