Abstract

Plastic biliary stents are easy to insert, inexpensive, easily removed, and are effective for a wide variety of indications. Metal stent placement can be justified for patients with inoperable cancer who are expected to survive at least several months. Metal stents are currently not recommended for benign disorders. Efforts will likely continue toward reducing biofilm- related stent occlusion, and further experience with coated SEMS is awaited.
