Abstract

The use of beta blockers in patients with left ventricular systolic dysfunction and congestive heart failure represents the most important advance in management of these conditions since the advent of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. It is critical that physicians caring for patients with these ailments fully incorporate beta blockade into their treatment regimen. In this article, Dr Frantz summarizes the benefits of beta blockers, appropriate recipients, and effective methods of initiating such therapy.
