Abstract

National consensus standards provide guidance on the requisite steps to achieve HLD of flexible endoscopes. AERs can enhance efficiency and reliability of HLD by replacing some manual reprocessing steps. Use of an AER may also reduce exposure of personnel to chemical germicides. Manual precleaning before HLD is required for all but 1 recently approved AER; however, postmarketing clinical data on the efficacy of the cleaning phase of this device are limited. There are insufficient data to recommend a single method, device, or agent to achieve HLD.
