note = "Funding Information: This supplement of GIE summarizes a major effort by the ASGE, supported by an unrestricted grant from TAP Pharmaceuticals, to promote and develop high-quality research in the field of endoscopy, and to advance academic achievement based on endoscopic research. The ASGE research committee organized this annual conference, now looking toward its third year, to provide education and personalized training on the key skills required for academic success. On July 22 and 23, 2006, in Washington, DC, 20 ASGE members (senior GI fellows and faculty members) participated in the workshop, which was led by 12 faculty members from the ASGE and National Institutes of Health. Topics ranged from developing and organizing research studies to successful grant- and manuscript-writing strategies. Further, each attendee brought a research project and, during two small group sessions, each led by two faculty members, these protocols were reviewed, revised, and “polished” into grants poised for submission to the ASGE and/or other funding sources. More importantly, small-group discussions on such protocols provided an invaluable forum of practical, “hands-on” training in endoscopic research methodology, proposal writing, and manuscript preparation for all attendees.
