Abstract

Diverticulitis occurs when diverticula present in the colonic wall become infl amed. This leads to micro - or macroscopic perforation of these sac - like protrusions. Diverticulitis can be divided into complicated and uncomplicated presentations, and the management differs based on the presentation. Surgical intervention is not always a necessity. This chapter summarizes the clinical manifestations and diagnosis of acute diverticulitis as well as current recommendations for medical and surgical management.
