N2 - In a door-to-door survey on common neurological disorders in Sicily, a screening symptom questionnaire and a brief neurological examination were administered. All subjects, resident in Santa Teresa Riva (Messina Province) on November 1, 1987, with a history of suspected epileptic seizures, in any period of their life, or with previous diagnosis of epilepsy, were extensively investigated by a neurologist, according to a standardized diagnostic protocol. In order to increase their reliability, all diagnoses, formulated on specific criteria, were rewieved by an adjudication panel. 25 subjects were found to be affected by active epilepsy; the crude prevalence rate being 3.63 per 1000 of the population. The age-specific prevalence rate was constant for each age group, except for a small peak in the group aged 40-49 years. Sex specific rate was similar.
